We Are Not Princesses is a documentary film that was shot over three months in the Autumn of 2014. The film stems from Antigone of Syria, an eight-week drama workshop in Lebanon with 35 Syrian women from the Sabra, Shatila, and Bourj el-Barajneh refugee camps. The workshops culminated in three performances at Al Madina Theatre in Hamra, Beirut in December 2014.
We Are Not Princesses brings Syrian women's voices to the world. The film follows a group of women living as refugees in Beirut while they workshop a version of Antigone. The play resonates with their own experiences and informs the way they come to see themselves. It is going to San Diego with the IRC on May 8, and will screen in San Francisco at DocFest in mid-June.
